The interstates weren’t there, yet. Our Volkswagen beetle got us as far as St John, NB before we had to turn around to come back home. As we got to New Hampshire we saw the magnificent fall colors so we headed west through NH into Vermont. During that ride we decided to find a motel for the night. What we found was that there was nothing available and the reason was the leaf peepers…..huh?? What was that? We were a couple of 22 year old kids from the city and never heard that term before. Yeah, the trees turned beautiful colors at home too, but we didn’t know that lots of people actually travelled north to look at them? We learned something new that day and also learned that we had to drive all the way to Albany before we found a hotel room!
